Malawi is expected to experience a drier-than-normal 2026/27 rainy season in most parts of the Southern and Central regions, according to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS).
The department says most areas in the two regions are likely to receive below-normal rainfall, with established rains expected to be delayed until around mid-December.
Meanwhile, most parts of the Northern Region are expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall, although some areas could face flooding and waterlogging.
DCCMS has warned that prolonged dry spells and high temperatures could negatively affect agricultural production, particularly maize, and has urged farmers to prepare early.
The forecast is largely influenced by the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to persist into the 2026/27 rainy season.
